“Mobile First” refers to the strategy that recognizes the majority of adults turn to their phones as their first source of information, whether it be news, shopping, research, or online content. Therefore, all design and development of online content should consider the mobile user first, not as an afterthought.
Take a look at some recent statistics from the PEW Research Group’s 2014 Report on Mobile Technology:
- 25% of mobile users are mobile only (they don’t use a desktop)
- In 2014, mobile Internet traffic exceeded desktop Internet traffic on Black Friday for the first time at 52.1%. This was a 30% increase from 2013.
- Nearly half of consumers say they won’t return to a website if it doesn’t load properly on their mobile device.
- In 2015, it is projected that 190 million people in the United States will own a smartphone.
